Instant testing is available in Gilford, Portsmouth, Concord, Manchester, Salem, Andover, Concord, Nashua, Lowell, Chelmsford, Brookline and other areas.

Drug abuse is a serious problem in Maine. Methamphetamine is a key drug of choice. In addition, the increase in heroin and other illicit drugs in drug indicators is the key finding for this 2013 reporting period in the State of Maine. Heroin has re-emerged in drug indicators as a serious problem in the State of Maine. During the last decade, problems with illicit drugs were dwarfed by Maine’s problem with pharmaceutical misuse, usually in combination with other pharmaceuticals. Experts say that to truly alleviate Maine's drug problem, the state must address substance abuse and provide more funding for clinics and youth diversion programs.

Available Testing Methods in Maine • ETG Alcohol Testing • Hair Follicle Drug Testing • Urine Drug Testing (DOT or non-DOT) • Teenager (School) Drug Testing • Pre-Employment Drug Screening Testing • Self-Drug or Individual Drug Testing • DOT Random Consortium Drug Testing Programs

Maine has a comprehensive law that regulates when drug tests may be given, specifies testing procedures that ensure employee privacy, and requires that opportunities be provided for rehabilitation and treatment of substance-abuse problems (ME Rev. Stat. Tit. 26 Sec. 681et seq.). The law covers all public and private employers, regardless of size. Employers wanting to enact a drug testing program must have a policy approved by the Maine Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Standards.

Before it may require, request, or suggest that any employee or applicant submit to a substance abuse test, an employer must have a written policy that has been developed by the employer and approved by the Department of Labor, and a copy of the policy must be provided to employees 30 days prior to implementation. The policy should include: • The employment positions subject to testing; • The procedures/consequences of voluntary admission of substance abuse, and available assistance; • When testing may occur; • The procedures for specimen collection and storage; • The substances tested for; and • The consequences of a positive result or refusal to take a test.

Before establishing a testing program, employers with 20 or more full-time employees must have made an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) available to their employees.
