Maryland Drug Testing

Getting tested for drugs and alcohol in the state of Maryland is more convenient than ever before. Keep scrolling to learn about how we work with employers, employees, and other individuals in Maryland to protect our communities from substance use.

Conduct Workplace Drug Testing With US Drug Test Centers

Drug testing is vital for Maryland employers, especially with marijuana legalization and our country's problems with opioid abuse. The illegal use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace can lead to an increase in crime and on-the-job accidents. It hurts morale and productivity among workers, and it increases employee turnover.

How can Maryland employers ensure their place of business stays free of drugs and alcohol? Here's how US Drug Test Centers can help:

  • We will conduct all of your workplace drug testing, including pre-employment (for prospective employees), random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and return-to-duty drug testing.

  • We'll train your staff — including your designated employer representative (DER) — to manage your workplace drug testing program, including how to determine reasonable suspicion.

  • US Drug Test Centers can run all of your background checks. Order them and view your results electronically.

Maryland Drug Testing FAQs

Do employers in Maryland need to comply with mandatory state-specific rules when drug & alcohol testing?
Yes. Maryland has very detailed rules for employers that wish to conduct employee drug testing.
Is a Drug-Free Workplace policy required in Maryland?
No, however, employers are strongly encouraged to have a written policy in place (Policy is specifically required to comply with the Maryland’s’ voluntary law).
What are some compliance requirements in Maryland?
No breath alcohol testing is permitted. Hair testing is specifically permitted but only for pre-employment drug testing, with specific collection procedures. On-site single use screening devices are specifically permitted (devices are required to be FDA approved). Employers or agents conducting (collecting) testing must be registered with the state and pay a fee (every two years). Employers in this state must use a Medical Review Officer (MRO).
Are employers in Maryland able to use drug screening for any other claim defenses or state-specific financial benefits?
Yes. Employers may leverage an ‘Intoxication’ defense to a Workers’ Compensation Claim, based on a positive drug test result; however, there is a presumption that intoxication or drugs did not cause the injury. A positive drug test may also make an employee ineligible for unemployment compensation if terminated for misconduct. Employers wishing to leverage either of these benefits must voluntarily comply with very detailed program rules.
Does Maryland authorize marijuana (THC) or cannabidiol (CBD) use?
Yes. Maryland has authorized the use of medical marijuana. The law does not directly impact the workplace. The law specifically states that employers do not need to accommodate the use of marijuana while at work.
Can I be fired or lose a job offer in Maryland if I fail a drug test?
In Maryland, if you test positive on a drug test it can be grounds for termination or a rescinded job offer.
What are the medical and recreational marijuana-related rules in Maryland?
In Maryland, medical and recreational marijuana use is considered legal and cannot be used against you if you test positive, unless you are in a safety sensitive position.

Drug Testing in Maryland for Individuals

Drug and alcohol testing is also available for individuals. Our court-ordered drug testing services include DUI, child custody, and probation drug testing.

Why Us?

What makes us the best partner for all of your drug testing needs?

Unparalleled Accuracy

We only work with SAMHSA-certified laboratories in Maryland. This type of specially certified laboratory is held to higher standards when it comes to its drug testing processes and equipment.

Additionally, a medical review officer (MRO), who is a licensed physician, confirms the results of all drug tests. Let's say you require employees to undergo testing and one employee receives a positive test result. But they believe it was a false-positive drug test due to their prescription medication. An MRO can help validate the results.
