What is a CDLIS?

The Commercial Driver's License Information System (CDLIS) is a comprehensive national database that allows state driver licensing agencies (SDLAs) to verify that each commercial driver possesses a single driver license and maintains a complete driver record.

• The CDLIS is a database comprising state DMV records, which include the current and up to three prior commercial motor vehicle licenses.
• As a best practice, employers seeking to hire CDL drivers should obtain CDLIS reports, utilize the FMCSA’s Pre-Employment Screening Program, review state motor vehicle records, and examine previous employment records.
• CDLIS reports serve as a crucial tool for transportation companies to identify a driver’s license number, enabling them to verify the qualifications, endorsements, driving history, and compliance of truck driver candidates through a motor vehicle record (MVR).
