Reports published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration estimate that there are 305,000 people over the age of 12 who are dependent or abuse illicit drugs or alcohol in Oregon. Though Salem is nowhere near epidemic levels, drug testing and drug free workplace programs help to directly address substance abuse issues in a community.
Instant Urine Drug Testing in Salem
One way in which US Drug Test Centers helps employers maintain a drug-free workplace is by performing point of collection testing, or POCT, on site. With this testing, the donor provides a urine specimen and a screening test is performed immediately. If the test is negative then the testing is complete.
If the results of the instant screening test read positive, this is considered an incomplete test and the urine specimen must be sent to a laboratory for confirmation testing. It will then be reviewed by a Medical Review Officer. The confirmation test is called a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). This testing is performed on all non-negative screens with an extremely precise piece of equipment, which measures the molecular size, charge, and weight of the atoms in the drug metabolites. Due to the precision of the machine, it can tell the difference between poppy seeds and opiates, ibuprofen and THC metabolites, second hand smoke and actual inhalation, nasal sprays and amphetamines. The GC/MS confirmation method rules out any false positives. A drug testing program without GC/MS confirmation leaves an employer open to a significant amount of liability.
Reporting of Drug and Alcohol Testing Results
For point of collection testing, POCT, we do this electronically with immediate reporting and cloud based storage of the results. State laws must be reviewed to see if there are any restrictions on the instant test.
With lab based testing, negative results are typically reported one business day after the collection. Anytime a specimen has to go to the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) testing method, you will be looking at 2 – 3 additional business days for results. Employers must be patient on these results as an accurate result positive or negative is critical to making business decisions that will not lead to exposure to liability.
Putting the Drug and Alcohol Test Results into Action
The decision you make on how to deal with an employee with a positive drug or alcohol test result should be based on your previously written drug-Free workplace policy. The disciplinary action for the positive drug test should be clearly stated in your policy. If you do not have a written drug-Free workplace policy; this is a problem that needs immediate corrective action. The corrective action is to immediately implement a comprehensive written drug-Free workplace policy. In order to avoid exposure to liability, you need to have a written policy before taking adverse action against an employee. US Drug Test Centers can assist employers with custom written Drug-Free Workplace Policies.
Salem's Most Accurate Drug or Alcohol Testing
How do I know if the test is accurate? All of US Drug Test Centers' specimens go to a SAMHSA certified laboratory for testing. SAMHSA has an active advisory board that keeps its employees and administrators abreast of current and changing laws when it comes to drug testing. There are Mandatory Guidelines for Federal Employee Drug Testing Programs that must carry consistencies throughout every agency and company that SAMHSA laboratories supplies. The advisory board has professionals that are uniquely qualified in their respective fields to review scientific evidence in the area of drug and alcohol treatment and testing practices.
